La più grande dimostrazione dell'enorme valore che I Maori attribuiscono a questi tatuaggi, è il fatto che soltanto ai membri della tribù è concesso tatuarsi un moko, tutti gli altri invece possono scegliere un simbolo kirituhi. Il kirituhi è un tatuaggio meno mistico e quindi può farlo chiunque, mama è un simbolo altrettanto importante perché rappresenta la rinascita spirituale.
I tatuaggi maori possono essere divisi in due grandi categorie a seconda del loro significato: gli Enata e gli Etua. Gli Enata vengono utilizzati sia per rappresentare esperienze di vita, sia per dichiarare il proprio stato sociale, infatti possono essere arricchiti con diversi simboli proprio per simboleggiare il matrimonio, la nascita di un figlio ecc. Un tatuaggio Enata invertito rappresenta invece un nemico. L'altra categoria è quella degli Etua e racchiude tutti I simboli religiosi e spirituali e rappresentano onore.
